Cross Country

Ty ran his first cross country race on Thursday evening. It was a blistering 88 degrees and the sun was hot. After waiting almost two hours for his turn, he ran his mile and smiled through most of it. He took an elbow to the jaw and didn't let it slow him down even though he expressed some strong opinions about that boy's level of sportsmanship. He is proud of himself and we are pretty proud of him too. The coach told us the kids have no idea what to expect the first time and therefore, their scores improve dramatically after each race. I have no doubt because even I was shocked to see over 600 kids ready to race that evening. Ty ran his mile in nine minutes seventeen seconds. I suspect next week, he will understand the importance of waiting until after his race to play tag and wrestle with his friends. However, that is part of the fun and he is having a blast.

The best part though? The boy honestly believed there would be a cake celebration at the finish line. Lord, he has my heart.
